College grants for single mothers are a great way to help pay for your education when you don’t have enough money to do so on your own. The stats show that over 35% of single mothers live at or near the poverty line. These women have no chance at going back to school – not without external help. Hence, the government and other organizations have reached out with financial aid for single moms who want to go back to school.

Now when looking at getting a college grant, there are typically going to be three different sources you have to select from: government, schools, and private organizations.

The government is probably your biggest source of grant funding for single moms. Millions each year are given out to needy individuals through grants – as a single mom making low wages, you are eligible for some grant money if you spend the time trying to find it. To get a government grant, you will need to go to the official grant website and apply for grants. There is a class of single parent grant that’s given out to women raising children by themselves. There are also a variety of other grants you can apply for as well. You may be able to find education grants or other grants given to low income persons who want to go to school.

Keep in mind that the government also offers a variety of grants through it’s federal student aid program. You will have to apply with a FAFASA (free application for federal student aid) form. By applying for federal student aid, you may qualify for several grants. Some of the grants are given out on the basis of your high school or college grades, but some of the grants are needed based as well.

Now besides government grants for women, there are also college grants given out to low income students. Practically every college has a financial aid department that may give out some sort of grant. As a single mom, you stand a good chance of qualifying for the financial aid. You will have to look the financial aid website of a college to see if you qualify or not and what sort of aid is indeed offered to single parents.

Don’t forget about searching the private sector for grants too. There are plenty of grants offered in the private sector as well. Not all of these grants will be geared just for single mothers – but some of them will be. There may be organizations that help single moms attend college – it’s worth searching online. Some businesses may offer school grants as well – especially if you are an employee. There are a lot of general grants and scholarships offered through websites and foundations. To find these types of grants, you are going to have to search online. Make a point of checking out ever grant offer you spot, join a forum with other like minded single moms – you should be able to get some good grant tips – and spend the time applying for grants as much as you can. Getting a grant is often a numbers game – the more grants you send out, the higher the chance of getting some money.
